This is the question that seems to trump all questions. Anyone who is serious about pursuing God and the truth about Him will inevitably come to this topic: Why does God allow suffering? Even as many throughout history have asked this question, it still is surrounded by many myths and false ideas.
John 11
The Bible’s 4 Acts of Human History
1.) CREATION: God created all things perfect, including humans in His image. He gave us responsibility. Genesis 1:24-31
2.) FALL: People rejected God’s authority, rebelled, and brokenness entered God’s creation. Genesis 3:1-19
3.) REDEMPTION: God is working to restore His people and creation to perfection; Jesus is His plan. Colossians 1:15-23
4.) GLORY: God will be successful in His plan. Revelation 21-22:6
God created free choice & responsibility, not EVIL.

Small Group Questions
What are common explanations for why God allows suffering, pain, or evil? What seems most plausible to you?
Does it seem to you that God is passive or distant from suffering? Do you believe God has a plan? How would you describe His plan?
Divide the group in pairs and have each group read a passage and explain: Genesis 1:24-31, Genesis 3:1-19, Colossians 1:15-23, and Revelation 21-22:6. Have them answer contextual questions relating to their passages: What is the setting (who is speaking, who is listening, where/when are they, etc.)? What verses stick out to you?
How does God’s decision to create humans with free choice and responsibility affect the occurrence of pain, evil, and suffering?
Explain the story of John 11 or have someone who is familiar with the story do so. Fill in the gaps or gently correct errors by monitoring the historical account in the Bible.
