What is baptism?

Romans 6:1-11

– Baptism is a public expression of a decision that an individual has made to place their faith in Christ.  Much like a ring is symbolic of a wedding commitment, baptism is an expression of one’s restored relationship with God through what Jesus did on the cross.
– Baptism literally means “to immerse” and is a re-enactment of what happens when we place our faith in Christ: our old way of life is buried with Christ’s death, and we are raised to walk in new life.  In Jesus’ day, baptism was a sign that one needed to be made right with God.  After Jesus died and rose again, it took on new meaning as a picture of how Christ saves those who place their faith in Him.
– Being immersed in water does not earn anything.  That would make baptism a religious work to make us right with God.  Being made right with God comes from what Christ did for us.

When is a person baptized?

Acts 2:41-428:35-3916:30-33

We believe that a person is ready to be baptized immediately after they have placed their faith in Jesus.  We do this because this is the general practice in the Bible.  Some may feel they need to wait until they are a more mature Christian to be baptized.  While spiritual growth in Christ is important, it is not a requirement for baptism.  What is needed is faith in Christ.  In fact, this is part of the beauty of the Gospel.  The new life we have is grace from Jesus and freely given to all who place their faith in Him.

Why do we practice baptism?

Matthew 28:18-20

– Baptism does not make us right with God, but is one of the first steps that Jesus asks us to take in our walk with Him.
– Jesus was baptized to make Himself a model for us to follow.
– Baptism is a party!  It is a celebration of the beginning of a new life in Christ.

 Who can attend a baptism?

We encourage those being baptized to invite friends and family.  It is a huge celebration, and we want as many to be a part of the big day as possible.  We like to do baptism in public places, either in swimming pools, hot tubs, portable baptistries, or better yet, in the ocean.
